Graduating college is a huge event in any young adult's life and for one Saudi student, it was also quite unique.

Maram, a business graduate, received her degree along with her mother, Saleha Assiri, who graduated on the same day.

Assiri had not finished high school before she got married and decided to fulfill her dream of getting a higher education a few years ago.

She enrolled at King Khaled University, the same institution her daughter was attending, and the two recently graduated together.

The proud mom now holds a bachelors degree in media and communications and is going viral for graduating along with her own daughter.

An incredible achievement...

Speaking to Al Arabiya, Assiri said she had to overcome several obstacles in order to achieve her dream of graduating from college.

"I’ve always loved learning but I did not finish my high school education because I married early and moved to the eastern region," she explained.

After resettling in Abha, Assiri's mother convinced her to resume her studies and she eventually decided to pursue that.

"Although I am a housewife and have so many responsibilities, I adapted with the idea of learning again. The day I was accepted into college was like a feast for me," she added.

She also said her children, friends, and close relatives were supportive all along, helping her take care of her children while studying.

Assiri, who is solely responsible for her children, now hopes to find a job that will help her support them.

People reacted to the news with excitement

"We congratulate both mother and daughter on such a historic moment. This is truly beautiful."

"Mashallah"

"Good on her"

"This defines ambition and determination"

"It's truly something to be proud of."

This is what committing to a dream looks like

"Dreams and commitment."

"Alf Mabrook!"

Not the first Saudi mom to follow her dreams

While Assiri's story is quite unique, given that she graduated on the same day as her daughter, this certainly isn't the first time a Saudi mom has gone viral for pursuing her education later in life.

In fact, many women in the country who were deprived of education are determined to overcome obstacles facing them to earn higher degrees.

Earlier last week, a video capturing a Saudi son celebrating his mom's graduation from grade 12 at a school that teaches the elderly won over people's hearts on social media.
