Egyptian authorities are investigating a tragic domestic abuse case that saw a mother throw her two sons into the Nile river, killing one of them.

According to Al Arabiya, marital disputes with her husband were the reason behind her horrific actions.

The perpetrator reportedly threw her sons Hani (6 months old) and Mohammed (5 years old) into the river. Passersby directly informed the police, but law enforcement officers were only able to save the younger child.

According to local media, the mother told interrogators she committed the crime due to her marital issues with her husband, who did not allow her to visit her parents.

The accused has been arrested pending further investigations.

Not the only crime of its kind this month

Last week, Egyptian Mahmoud Nazmy confessed to throwing his two children, aged three and four, from the top of the Faraskur Bridge.

They both died and their bodies were found in a water channel in the Damietta Port, according to Egypt Independent.

Al Arabiya reported that the 30-year-old drug addict, who is deeply indebted, said he killed his children to "relieve them of his financial burden".
