A bizarre court case reported in the UAE earlier this week saw a man stand before a judge for stealing his own fiancé's jewelry to buy her a car.

The GCC national is currently appealing a two-year jail sentence and deportation order he was previously handed down by a Ras Al Khaimah court.

The original verdict was passed after the man was charged with stealing 130,000 dirhams ($35,391) worth of items from his fiancé's home in May.

According to Emarat Al Youm, the defendant then sold the items and used the money to buy his bride-to-be a car and several other gifts.

The defendant's lawyer said his client was mentally unstable...

The defendant's appeals lawyer, Mahmoud Shebl, argued against the original verdict, saying his client shouldn't have been charged with a crime because he was going through depression and insomnia at the time he committed the theft.

The lawyer also added that the defendant is currently undergoing treatment for his mental illness at a local hospital.

No one can even with the news...

"What's this mess I just read about!!!"

"I can't even take this in"

"He stole from her to buy her a car? What is he on? Can someone get me the same thing?"

"He gave her a gift that was already hers"

Tweeps sure had fun with the news...

"It isn't considered theft if he ended up using the money to buy her a car. He's a good thief."

Others made up their own theories on the matter...

"He must've bought the car for himself and then pretended it was a gift for her when he got in trouble."
