It's no secret that Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, is a people's person, and Muslims know that firsthand.
With Islamophobes rising to power and spreading hate in the West, it's always refreshing to see a leader supporting Muslims and making them feel welcome, rather than collectively blaming them for the acts committed by radicalized terrorists.
Here are 6 reasons why Muslims love Trudeau:
1. He went to Pride Week wearing 'Eid Mubarak' socks
On June 25, Trudeau partook in Canada's largest LGBTQ+ event whilst wearing rainbow patterned socks that had "Eid Mubarak" printed on them. The internet simply lost it.
Trudeau was praised for celebrating Pride and Eid at the same time, as the event coincided with Eid El-Fitr - the holiday Muslims celebrate to mark the end of Ramadan.
His socks, which read "Eid Muabarak" in Arabic and included the crescent (which is regarded as an Islamic symbol,) were made by the Toronto-based Halal Socks, according to The Telegraph.
2. He stood in solidarity with Muslims while Trump spread hate
Earlier this year, when U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order that restricts immigration from several Muslim-majority countries, Trudeau responded by saying that Canada welcomes refugees rejected by the U.S.
"To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada," he tweeted at the time.
His government also offered temporary residency to anyone directly affected by the ban.
3. He gave one of the most pro-Muslim speeches by any Western head of state
When a white supremacist terrorist attacked a mosque in Quebec, Canada, in the wake of Trump's "Muslim ban," Trudeau gave an incredibly powerful speech assuring firm solidarity with Muslims.
"Last night’s horrible crime against the Muslim community was an act of terror committed against Canada, and against all Canadians," he said in response to the attack. "We will grieve with you. We will defend you. We will love you. And we will stand with you."
4. He has joined the Muslim community for prayer at a mosque
Last year, a video documenting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to a mosque in Canada emerged, dating back to Ramadan 2013, almost two years before he was elected as PM.
As the leader of the Liberal Party, Trudeau had visited the Jamea Masjid mosque in West Canada donning the traditional Islamic thawb.
In the video, he is seen delivering a speech that begins with the Muslim greeting "peace be upon you" and highlights the fact that the values of Ramadan and Canadian principles are one and the same.
5. He celebrates Islamic holidays with on-point messages
Trudeau's speeches never fail to impress, and the speeches he delivers on Muslim holidays are no exception.
Last month, the Canadian PM marked Ramadan with a heartwarming message to Muslims celebrating the holy month. His message particularly stood out when compared to U.S. President Donald Trump's Ramadan statement, in which the latter used the opportunity to talk about terrorism.
While Trump's statement mentioned terrorism in almost every sentence, Trudeau sufficed with noting the importance of Ramadan and paying tribute to Muslims' contributions to Canada.
6. He supported Muslims' right to pray at school
When groups launched a campaign against Muslim students performing Friday prayers in Canadian schools, Trudeau denounced the opposition and supported Muslims' right to pray.
"We, of course, need to continue to work to ensure that everyone understands that respecting their neighbours, that moving beyond mere tolerance, towards acceptance and friendship is the path that Canada needs to continue on," he said.
