The misogyny and patriarchy across the Arab world is alive and well.
The nurturing of such systems - through discriminatory laws - has allowed men to believe they have the right to patrol women's bodies and actions.
"The battles over women's bodies can be won only by a revolution of the mind," as Egyptian feminist and journalist Mona Eltahawy once put it.
Noting that the "revolution of the mind" may take years, women have been fighting for change on their own. Some through their writings, others via the film industry, and many with humor.
