It's been five years since the war in Syria started. Five whole years. Have you ever wondered where the country and its people might be if wasn't caught in war, with so many Syrians seeking refuge in neighboring countries because for all they know things won't get better?
UNICEF along with its ambassadors and supporters including Mia Farrow, Mahmoud Kabil, Liam Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave and Donia Samir Ghanem have released a video shedding light on the prolonged war that has taken the lives of many Syrians in the past five years.
#FIVEyears of war in Syria has resulted in over 250,000 people killed, more than eight million people in need of assistance and about 6,000 schools that can no longer be used. What about all those children that have been born in the last five years? Where is their future heading?
“In Syria, violence has become commonplace, reaching homes, schools, hospitals, clinics, parks, playgrounds and places of worship,” Dr. Peter Salama, UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa said, according to a UNICEF report . “Nearly 7 million children live in poverty, making their childhood one of loss and deprivation.”
This is not to say a video like this can put an end to something like war. But, it's a start. Acknowledging that five years have gone by and nothing has changed is definitely a push in the right direction. It's time for something to be done to end the violence and war against humanity. If spreading the word can help at all, let's do so.
