For those waiting for a space program to visit Mars, there's something you can do in the meantime that will make you think you're inside Matt Damon's "The Martian."

Situated in Iran, the Martian (Merrikhi) Mountains are one of the country's most well-known touristic attractions. They are located 50 kilometers from Chabahar, Sistan and Baluchestan.

The mountains weren't always as visible as they are today. In fact, they were buried under piles of soil.

Does this look real to you?

I mean look at those huge jagged rocks

The natural integration of red sand

Does it feel like Mars yet?

Layers on layers of mountains piled up

Standing in sharp contrast with blue skies

Sunny or cloudy, the compositions are divine

It blends different colors wonderfully

But thanks to rapid soil erosion, these cracks in the ground came about

Stifling plant growth

Environmental disaster can be devastatingly beautiful
