Madaba recently won the 2016 World Crafts City title for mosaic, giving it an "advanced status" on the world tourism map of crafts and mosaic.

Part of a floor mosaic in the early Byzantine church of Saint George in Madaba, the mosaic map of the Levant region contains the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, dating back to the 6th century AD.

"The title gives Madaba an added value as a tourist destination," said Lina Annab, Tourism Minister, according to The Jordan Times .

Madaba is home to some of the most widely known Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, and the Madaba Map is probably the most recognized worldwide.

Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank was also awarded the "World Crafts City" title, making it the first time a Palestinian city receives the award.

“Hebron is an ancient Palestinian city that has more than 6,000 years of history and heritage that should be shown to the whole world," said Rola Maayah, the PA's tourism and Antiques Minister, according to Middle East Monitor .
