In one of the most bizarre lawsuits ever filed in Saudi Arabia, a groom sued a friend who gave him two riyals ($0.5) as a wedding gift.
According to Okaz Newspaper, the groom was left angry and upset after his friend gave him the wedding gift in an envelope with "this is so much more than you deserve", written on it.
After he was summoned to court, the defendant admitted to giving his friend the gift, saying he wasn't able to give him more than two riyals due to difficult financial circumstances.
After the first court hearing, the prosecution accused the defendant of "insulting his friend by writing an inappropriate statement on the envelope he gave him".
The case will now be referred to the concerned authorities who will have to issue a final verdict in the case.
Shock on social media
"What do you expect the court to do? Make them 5 riyals?"
People just can't even...
"You're going to pay your lawyer more than 2 riyals now, God help you"
"God help the woman who married this groom"
Many think the incident was blown out of proportion
"This is just not worth a lawsuit."
"It might've all been a joke, you just took it too seriously"
"And they say women are simple-minded"
People can't wait to hear the verdict
"I really want to know what the judge's verdict is going to be."
Not everyone's taking the incident lightly though
"If he's someone you don't care about or value, why attend his wedding? The defendant deserves punishment."
Some believe the groom did the right thing
"If anyone insults you in any way, you have the right to sue them."
