He also said that Islam "aims for people to live in peace."

Morgan Freeman revels in the Muslim call to prayer (adhan) calling it one of the most "beautiful and haunting" sounds in the world.

His comments were made in an episode of National Geographic's The Story of God, a documentary series about different faiths in the world.

"One of the most haunting and beautiful sounds in the world is the Muslim call to prayer," Freeman said as he sat down with an imam at a mosque.

Freeman asked the imam what the origin of the adhan is and how the muezzin (the one who calls the prayer) is chosen.

"Meeting Muslims face to face, I've learned that Islam aims for people to live in peace," Freeman said in the episode.

"But watching the news today, you'd be forgiven for not knowing that."

The Muslim call to prayer has stirred controversies over the years, particularly in Europe where muezzins are banned in some countries.

Earlier this month, Israel ministers have moved to ban the use of speakers for "adhan" as citizens “suffer habitually and daily from loud and unreasonable noise that is caused by the call of muezzin from mosques.”

Morgan Freeman went on to recite the call to prayer himself, and did a pretty good job.

This wouldn't be the first time Freeman shows support for the Muslim community.

In October, Freeman was spotted at a mosque in Queens Park London, as he sat among hundreds of Muslims during a Ashoura ceremony.
