Crying emojis and broken heart symbols took over the interwebs on Tuesday after official confirmation that fan-favorite celebrity couple, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik, have broken up.

The Palestinian-American model and the British-Pakistani pop star, who spent over two years together, confirmed the split with heartfelt messages shared on social media.

Malik first shared the news in a statement posted on Twitter, which was soon followed by a tweet from Hadid.

"She has such an incredible soul," Malik writes

In the statement posted on the popular social media platform Twitter, the singer and songwriter described the now-ended relationship as "incredibly meaningful, loving and fun," adding that he thinks highly of Hadid.

He went on to say that he is grateful for their fans and asked them to respect their privacy.

"I want nothing but the best for him," Hadid replies

In response to Malik's tweet, Hadid took to Twitter to say that she is "forever grateful for the love, time and life lessons" she shared with him, promising to continue supporting him as a friend.

We all have one question: WHY?

Hadid and Malik did not mention the reason behind their breakup but suggested the decision was amicable.

A source who spoke to a British news outlet said the two have "grown apart" and cited their "crazy work schedules that would put pressure on any relationship."

"They are no longer a couple but they do remain close and are supportive of each other," the source added.

According to CNN, Malik has already unfollowed Hadid on Instagram.

The two first got together in December 2015 and quickly became among the most admired young high-profile couples.

Just this January, the former One Direction got a tattoo of what appears to be an image of Hadid's eyes.

It's safe to say the internet is having a meltdown
