The list of ridiculous >Arab divorces doesn't seem to be shrinking. On the contrary, it seems to be expanding and a recent eyebrow-raising case is proof of that.
An Egyptian man divorced his wife of four years after she failed to lose weight following their 3-year-old daughter's birth.
Identified in a >local news report as Ramy, the 31-year-old husband walked out on his partner, 26-year-old Kholoud, due to the fact that "all her diets kept failing and she seemed careless about dropping the extra kilograms."
"We truly loved each other," he (brokenheartedly - of course not -) said. "She's my best friend's sister and we met through him. Everything was great at first and we rarely fought but it all changed after she got pregnant and gave birth," he explained.
Body-shaming taken to another level
"The moment she got pregnant, her appearance started to change and after giving birth she weighed over 100kg. She dropped to 96kg during the breastfeeding phase and I didn't say anything even though my sister and friends all lost their baby weight after giving birth," he added.
The (mistreated) husband then went on to explain that he spoke to his wife about the issue and asked her to lose weight several times but she would just brush him off.
"She'd complain that her diets aren't working and get angry at me, saying: 'So you married me because I was thin and when I gained weight you no longer want me?'" he said.
The man complained that his wife continued to gain weight even though she knew it was such a huge issue for him. "Become one with your partner" grew on him so much apparently that he treated her body as his.
To add a lovely fat, rounded cherry on top, he refused to be seen with her in public, told her she embarrassed him, and threatened to divorce her if she didn't change.
Regardless of the body-shaming, the strong woman stuck with her marriage, even though her husband continuously bullied and berated her over her weight gain.
"She would cry or get upset but wouldn't make any changes. I couldn't take a second wife due to my financial situation and didn't want to do anything prohibited in Islam so I quietly divorced her," he stated.
Not the only bizarre divorce case to recently be reported in Egypt
Earlier this year, a young Egyptian man >divorced his wife of four months because she overspent money on facial masks made out of yogurt.
Weeks before that, another strange divorce incident was reported by Egyptian media, and saw a man divorce his wife because "she always smells like onions and garlic."
Quite opposite of the case where the wife took "too much care of herself." In this one, the husband told a judge he wanted a separation because his wife "neglected her appearance."
Unfortunately, weird Arab divorces are quite too common
Weird Arab divorce cases are based on anything and everything but logic. After all, where's the logic in divorcing over a> shawarma wrap or a> birthday surprise?
But these are actual incidents that went down in countries across the region and, unfortunately, >they aren't uncommon.
