Popular American game show Jeopardy! is currently on people's bad side following a question on the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem.
It all started after one contestant on the show was denied victory for giving Palestine the credit it's been robbed of since the >illegal establishment of Israel on its land. The game show host Alex Trebek told the contestant, Katie Needle, that she got the answer wrong on the alleged birthplace of Jesus after claiming it was in Palestine. Under the "Where's the Church?" category, the contestant was asked to give an answer to the following clue:
"Built in the 300s A.D., the Church of the Nativity."
She responded with "What is Palestine?" and was told her answer was incorrect. Her opponent Jack McGuire answered "What is Israel?" which the host deemed the correct response.
Still, Needle, a retail supervisor from Brooklyn, ultimately won the game, gaining a total of $53,602, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The incident took place on Friday during round one of the game. The show and its host have been under fire since the broadcast took place, with many demanding an apology.
History matters and it's time the Israeli version of the past disappears.
The Church of Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born, is located in Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, which is internationally recognized as a part of Palestine.
Israel has maintained a military occupation of Palestinian territories, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem, since 1967. The western part of Jerusalem was captured by Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war; following the 1967 Six-Day War, East Jerusalem was annexed by Israel, removing the fence that split the ancient city into two. The international community has not recognized the West Bank and East Jerusalem as part of Israel since. Rather, they are treated as occupied territories.
Israel's entire establishment in 1948 was built on stolen Palestinian land, which it has since claimed to be its own. The decades-long illegal occupation has left millions without a home, without a family, and without the freedom to roam around land that belongs to its people. The illegitimate state continues to murder Palestinians day in and day out. Its existence is trivial, but some people (and game shows) think Israel's history deserves time on trivia night.
But people beg to differ.
