The music scene in 2014 witnessed two major breakthroughs: Vine became a legitimate source of user-submitted covers and the genre of pop reigned supreme with a multitude of similar but just-different-enough radio-friendly hits all year long.
Vine, the short-form video-sharing service acquired by Twitter, enabled anyone with a smartphone and an internet connection to flood the channels with six-second videos of themselves covering snippets of popular songs or creating their own original musical creations. The genre of pop, on the other hand, claimed radio airplay time, music store download rankings and every listener the world over for yet another year.
Then Us The Duo came along, seamlessly combining the two. Michael and Carissa Alvarado, the husband and wife power couple behind Us The Duo, have a staggering 4.2 million followers on Vine and are credited with popularizing the #6SecondCovers campaign on the platform. Thanks to their covers of songs, their popularity on Vine as exploded, racking up nearly half a billion views in the process.
