A video capturing a bride and groom walking across Jeddah's corniche caused quite the stir on Saudi social media over the weekend.

In the footage, the couple can be seen celebrating the occasion and snapping photos together as passersby gathered around them.

People filming the incident can also be heard harassing the duo, ridiculing them over their decision to take a walk in their wedding attire.

Soon after the video was uploaded to social media, it went completely viral, sharply dividing people's opinions on the matter.

The footage is still making the rounds online

While many thought the couple violated the country's rules by doing something quite unheard of in the ultra-conservative kingdom, others just didn't quite understand what the whole fuss was about.

Here's a little of what people had to say on Twitter:

Many were angered by the couple's actions

"This groom isn't normal, he's dancing with his bride in public."

"This is something that we do not accept across the kingdom"

Some didn't understand all the backlash

"Where's the violation here? When will you just let people live the way they want to."

"If they did this outside the kingdom people would've said it's cute"

People raised this important point

"The only violators I see in this video are all the goons screaming around the couple, filming them and acting in an unacceptable manner, revealing how socially regressed they are. When it comes to the bride and groom, they're doing nothing abnormal."

Others congratulated the couple

"May God grant them happiness and help us deal with all the bullies!!"

Not the first video of its kind this year

This isn't the first time a video of a couple celebrating a happy occasion in public sparks controversy in the kingdom.

Late in January, a video of an Asian man publicly proposing to his girlfriend in Jeddah's corniche went viral on Saudi Twitter.

The happy occasion caused quite the stir on social media, sparking a heated debate among Twitter users, some of whom said the man's actions violated the ultra-conservative kingdom's values and rules.

Authorities have issued a response in reaction to the recent incidents

In an official response to the newlyweds' now-viral video, Jeddah's governor Prince Khalid Al Faisal issued an order banning all similar public acts.

The decision effectively bans "any action that violates Islamic values and goes against Saudi Arabia's social norms and traditions in public."

It also states that anyone found violating the order will face arrest and legal consequences.

According to Akhbaar 24, if convicted in the case, the couple who appeared in the most recent footage may face jail sentences and lashes.

The video of the newlyweds has also divided the country's legal experts. While some deemed the couple's actions legal under Saudi law, many others said they can be prosecuted under the kingdom's sharia legislation.

Speaking to Akhbaar 24, Saudi lawyer and legal consultant Abdul Karim Al Kadi said

"If the groom who appeared in the latest video is found guilty, he may face a jail sentence. If the couple is found to be non-Saudi they'll also face deportation."
