For years now, millions of refugees have been forced to flee their war-stricken homes.
In 2015, the number of people displaced reached an all time high, with a total of 65.3 million people displaced, crossing the threshold the refugee agency has known since it's start.
On June 20, the office of the UNHCR is asking all of humanity to stand with refugees on #WorldRefugeeDay in honor of all those who have been displaced, mistreated, and forced to leave their homes.
People on Twitter acknowledge how bad the situation is for the refugees, and want you to stand with the refugees, not just today, but every single day in an effort to bring the crisis to an end.
Because refugees exist every single day, not just on #WorldRefugeeDay
Because with time, the situation is only getting worse. We can't waste another minute waiting for things to get better
Realizing that being a refugee is not a choice
Acknowledging the scale of the crisis is the first step in ensuring a better future for all refugees
Because if we don't do that, we have failed humanity
Putting the numbers in perspective really makes you realize how bad the situation has gotten
Standing #WithRefugees should not depend on your race, religion or politics
Because we all belong to one community, humanity
Know that refugees are people first ... and refugees later
To commemorate World Refugee Day on June 20, the UNHCR has released a petition that asks governments to ensure all refugee children get an education, that every refugee family can settle somewhere safe, and finally that all refugees can work or learn new skills in the community they become part of.
The petition is expected to be delivered to the UN headquarters in New York ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting, which is set to take place on September 19.
