A video of the touching moment a young Yazidi boy was reunited with his mother in Canada is going viral on social media.
First published by UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) via Youtube on August 30, the video resurfaced again earlier this week after the agency reposted a shorter version on Facebook.
In the footage, 13-year-old Emad, who was part of a group of 6,000 people taken by extremists on August 2014, is seen reuniting with his mother, who was resettled in Canada along with his siblings last year.
"Initially taken with his family, he was forcibly separated from them after a few months. His mother and siblings managed to escape sometime last year, but knew nothing of Emad’s fate," UNHCR wrote.
The boy was discovered in Mosul in July with the help of UNHCR.
A terrifying journey out of Iraq
After being found during the final days of the battle to retake the city of Mosul, UNHCR helped the traumatized youngster reunite with his uncle in Iraq.
That's when he was finally able to contact his mother again for the first time in months.
In the video published by the agency, Emad's uncle spoke of the horrific conditions the young boy was found in, saying he had a severe stomach injury caused by a bullet.
"It was like he was reborn," Emad's uncle said of the moment he was found alive.
Soon after, UNHCR and the Canadian government facilitated his relocation to Canada.
Finally resettled
Emad has now finally settled with his family in Canada.
He’s "learning to speak to his family in Kurdish again, after being forced to speak only Arabic while he was held captive."
“I want him to be healthy, I want him to be happy. I want him to be able to go wherever he wants to, freely," his mother said.
In his statement on the case, Jean-Nicolas Beuze, UNHCR’s Representative in Canada said:
“This reunification shows that there is always hope, and that when people are fleeing persecution, we need the international community and countries like Canada to offer them a safe space."
