What do you get when you have a combination of free time, access to disposable cars and a thirst to experience the extremes of life?
These young Arab men defy death – and sometimes gravity – the best way they know how: racing, drifting and general car shenanigans.
Most may call it reckless and unnecessary, but to these adrenaline junkies, it’s the ultimate expression of what it means to be young, alive and truly free.
This is what the shabab (boys) may be up to on any given Saturday afternoon:
1. Highway skiing?
Who said the Saudi desert doesn’t have a ski season? To these guys, it’s ski season all year round.
2. Side wheeling aka High Skiing ...
Is this not how cars are driven?
3. Dune bashing
The desert is their playground, and the cars are their toys.
4. Drifting while … shooting guns?
There's no way this can go wrong, right?
5. And cart drifting!
No car. No problem?
These stunts do come at a price however. Just this week a driver high-skiing his vehicle in the aftermath of a wedding reception was arrested in the UAE. In a similar incident, and just last week, another stunt driver was also arrested for doing burnouts on a wet road on Dubai's busy City Walk and sentenced alongside his two companions to 30 days of community service.
Earlier this month a four-wheeler tumbling down a sand dune in a Saudi Arabian dessert was caught on tape. We do not know if the driver managed to get out alive.
Bottom line? Be careful folks. It's all fun and games until someone seriously gets hurt.
