With four Middle Eastern recipients in the running for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize – arguably the most well-known award in the world – people in the region were on the edge of their seats, waiting for the results to come out.
Although, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos took home the award, Syria's group of unarmed rescue workers definitely won over people's hearts.
The White Helmets have saved more than 56,000 lives in Syria. For the group’s feats of relentless heroism, it received a nomination, but for them it was much more than that.
"[It is] not the Nobel Peace Prize what we long the most for, but to stop the killing in Syria/Peace for the Syrians/Rebuilding Syria," said Ammar Al Selmo, the head of the White Helmets in East Aleppo, according to The Independent .
And for a lot of people, this group of heroes is the true nobel winner.
