Two powerful and influential women have been hanging out together in Doha ...
Since United States' First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in Qatar, it seems like her and Sheikha Moza bint Nasser have hit it off splendidly.
The two leading ladies attended and spoke at the World Innovation Summit for Education
According to Doha News, Sheikha Moza passionately spoke about education in the region, expressing her concern that it is "not only paralyzed but going backwards at the speed of light."
"We need politicians to understand the power of education for their own countries, for their economies. Political will is required as is a joint sense of moral and historic responsibility to protect and invest in education," she said.
For her part, Obama lauded the high percentage of women attending universities and working in Qatar, crediting Sheikha Moza.
"The fact that two-thirds of university students in Qatar and nearly 40 percent of the Qatar work force are women is not an accident. It is due in huge part to her leadership," Obama said.
Both Sheikha Moza and Obama jointly awarded Dr. Sakena Yacoobi from Afghanistan the 2015 WISE Prize for Education Laureate.
Yacoobi is the founder and executive director of the Afghan Institute of Learning. After spending two decades working for education in Afghanistan, she is referred to as the country's "mother of education."
"This year’s Laureate is distinguished by her determination to bring education to her fellow citizens in the most adverse conditions of war and occupation," Sheikha Moza said.
"While her work focuses on girls and women, it also benefits boys and men. Millions have benefited from her optimism."
