Cases of polygamy are still common in several countries across the Arab world, however, it's rare to hear about a woman being married to more than one man at once.
This probably explains why the story of a Saudi man who recently discovered his Moroccan wife was married to another man shocked people on social media.
The man filed a lawsuit against his wife, who is based in Morocco, and divorced her after he came to realize that she got married to another man while he was in Saudi Arabia.
In his complaint, he stated that he learned of his wife's secret second union after he went to get a few legal documents sorted out. She had reportedly registered her first marriage in a court based in Casablanca and another in Rabat.
The woman has now been arrested by Moroccan authorities and faces trial in the case.
The case left social media users puzzled
"A Moroccan court is looking into a case filed by a Saudi man who recently discovered his wife was married to another man while also being married to him. Security sources said the Moroccan woman has two marriage contracts, one issued by a family court in Rabat, the other registered with a court in Casablanca."
People are completely shocked
Shocked is an understatement here
"Oh God."
Many are confused over the news
"How did she register her second marriage in court? Didn't it show up that there are two contracts under the same person's name?"
"The first Saudi man to feel what it's like when a husband takes a second wife"
Similar cases have previously been reported in the Arab world
Polyandry is forbidden in Islam and is considered a crime under the laws of countries across the Arab world.
Women who are found to be married to more than one man at the same time often face legal persecution.
While such cases are rare, this is not the first time one is reported. Earlier last year, the case of an Egyptian woman who was arrested for being married to three men at once, made headlines across the region.
