Saudi police arrested an Arab expat who murdered his wife in a horrific domestic abuse case that took place in Jeddah on Sunday, Ajel news site reported.
The woman had been beaten by the abuser for two days straight just because he felt "suspicious over her behavior" in recent weeks and thought she was cheating on him.
After attacking her, the man left his wife to bleed out to death in the couple's apartment and fled the scene.
When police arrived at the apartment after someone reported the incident, they discovered the wife's lifeless body, but couldn't find her husband.
However, hours later, officers were able to track him down and arrest him.
The news left many shocked
Some were just speechless
"There's no strength or power but in God."
"Because he was suspicious, he does this?"
"You know there's something called divorce, right? But to commit this horrific crime is just unacceptable."
"Even if she had done anything wrong, what right did he have to murder her?"
"There's a contract between both of them, that could have just ended with divorce."
People just couldn't even with the incident
"Suspicious of her, divorce her. May God curse you over what you've done."
"Heartlessness and oppression in one news story"
Domestic abuse in Saudi Arabia
Domestic abuse cases are widespread in Saudi Arabia, and for some women, physical abuse can often lead to murder.
Even though the issue is common among both Saudi nationals and expats, it continues to be underreported because many victims live with families who normalize gender-based violence, often forcing victims to remain silent about what they endure.
However, those who have come forth in recent years did so because of positive changes the kingdom has made in a bid to tackle the issue.
Saudi Arabia criminalized domestic violence in 2013 following an organized media campaign.
In 2016, the country also set up a domestic violence reporting center. In its first three days, the center received 1,890 domestic violence reports.
