Beverly Hills became the scene of a " Fast and Furious " style street race on Saturday between two high-performance sports cars.
A yellow Ferrari LaFerrari and the white Porsche 911 GT3 were captured on video by local residents as they sped through the calm residential streets nearly sideswiping vehicles, running stop signs, colliding briefly and narrowly missing at least one resident in their high-speed competition.
Police showed up to investigate the incident. However, the owner of the vehicles and the resident of the house where the cars concluded their race – with the Ferrari's engine smoking – is claiming diplomatic immunity. The license plate on the Ferrari is from Qatar.
Jacob Rogers, a video journalist who was on the scene following the race, was confronted by a man outside the rented $10 million home.
"He told me verbatim, 'I could have you killed and get away with it,'" Rogers said. "I told him, 'the press is allowed to be here on the sidewalk on a public street.' He said, '(Expletive) America' and threw a cigarette at me," Rogers told NBC4 .
According to NBC4, the United States' State Department has begun investigating the incident due to the diplomatic immunity claims.
The Porsche model involved in the incident is reported to be valued at about $130,000 and the Ferrari at anywhere from $1.5 million to upwards of $5 million.
This reckless driving incident comes after the United Arab Emirates has arrested two suspects for reckless driving while they were abroad in Europe. Videos of their driving antics became popular on social media leading to an investigation. According to Gulf News, the men were arrested for endangering lives and for representing the UAE in a negative way.
Will Qatar take similar action?
