Qatar has nominated Dr. Hessa Al Jaber to serve on the supervisory board of Volkswagen .

Jaber formerly served as the emirate's minister of information and communications technology and was the third Qatari woman to serve in a ministerial role. As one of the German automaker's largest investors, Qatar Investment Authority nominated Jaber to replace Akbar Al Baker, the CEO of Qatar Airways.

Jaber holds a doctorate in Computer Science from George Washington University in Washington D.C. She has been instrumental in leading numerous technology and communications projects in Qatar and has been ranked among Arabian Business's 100 most powerful Arab women.

The news comes as VW must ensure it meets new legal quotas requiring 30 percent of companies' board members to be women. Germany introduced the quotas in January in an effort to tackle gender inequality in business.
