Children are all individuals and have their own likes and dislikes. With special needs children, sometimes they communicate these preferences in different ways so it is important first to let children explore using their five senses. Through observing your child, you will notice patterns in what textures, sounds, tastes, and smells they are comfortable with and will also learn triggers for behaviors you want to avoid.

The beach is a good option if your child loves feeling the sand between their toes, feeling the ridges in seashells and running in an open space. There are plenty of beaches in Dubai to choose from; some are busier than others, so if your child does not feel comfortable around crowds of people, pick a beach with less people.

Other children are stimulated by music. If this is the case, find places that have live music your child can enjoy. Talk to them about the different sounds and encourage them to interact with the music. At home, you can make musical instruments of out everyday items. Try filling an empty water bottle with dried pasta, put the lid back on and shake. For an additional sensory activity, you child can paint the pasta different colours and decorate the bottle.

Minigolf is a great physical activity that the whole family can enjoy together. There are both indoor and outdoor options in Dubai, even some that glow in the dark which is perfect if you child enjoys vibrant colors.

You can also sign up for cooking classes, which can be a fun sensory experience and teach your children independence, math and science! There are classes for children but you can also find some for you to do with your child so you can spend quality time together and have a delicious reward at the end!
