Over the weekend, a passenger flight en-route to Dubai was forced to make an emergency landing following a hijack attempt.
The Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG147 took off from Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, but was forced to land at Chittagong's airport after a crew member reported "suspicious behavior" on board.
According to Reuters, the suspect attempted to enter the cockpit of the plane and waved a gun and threatened to blow up the plane. However, it has since been reported that the "gun" was in fact a toy. The man reportedly told the pilot of his personal issues with his wife, and requested to speak with Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Upon arrival to the Bangladeshi city, all 148 passengers and crew on board the flight were evacuated safely off the plane, according to the BBC.
The passenger - who has since been identified as Mohammad Palash Ahmed - suspected of attempting to hijack the flight was shot dead by special forces in Bangladesh.
The gunman was initially injured after being shot, but later succumbed to his wounds.
"We tried to arrest him or get him to surrender but he refused and then we shot him," said Major General Motiur Rahman, general commanding officer of Chittagong, according to the BBC.
"He is a Bangladeshi. We found a pistol from him and nothing else," he added.
The reason behind the attempted hijack remains unclear. The suspect is reported to have been "mentally imbalanced," said Air Vice Marshal M. Naim Hassan, chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, according to Fox News.
"I am saying this because of his behavior. He wanted to talk to the prime minister."
