Gigi Hadid is at the center of debate over her latest Vogue Italia photo-shoot ... in which the Palestinian-American model appears to be doing blackface - a theatrical process that uses make-up to depict non-black performers as black.

The magazine's May cover, shot by fashion photographer Steven Klein, shows an extremely bronzed version of Hadid, sparking outrage among users online.

"Is Vogue Italia trying to tell me that this is Gigi Hadid??" one Twitter user wrote, expressing just how unrecognizable the model appears.

Following intense backlash, Conde Nast International apologized for the cover in a statement.

"In our latest cover shoot by Steven Klein, the vision was to create a beachwear-themed story with a stylized bronzing effect," the statement read, according to HuffPost.

"We understand that the result has caused some debate with our readers, and we sincerely apologize if we have caused any offence."

"Shame"

"The worst generation"

"It's 2018 and we're still doing blackface"

"It's not even an accusation, [Gigi Hadid] straight up did it"

Some don't think a heavy tan is considered blackface ...

Hadid responds

Hadid has since removed the post from Instagram. She also issued an apology to her fans.

"I want to apologize because my intention is never to diminish those concerns or take opportunities away from anyone else, and I hope this can be an example to other magazines and teams in the future," she wrote.

The Palestinian-American model acknowledged the many issues prevalent in the fashion industry when it comes to representation.

"There are real issues regarding representation in fashion ― it’s our responsibility to acknowledge those issues and communicate through them to work towards a more diverse industry," she added.

But, people weren't buying her apology

"You could've said no"

"She willingly throws her employers under the bus"

However, not a first time Hadid gets called out for "blackface"

In 2015, Hadid was accused of blackface and cultural appropriation after appearing on the cover of the same magazine.

But, it's not just blackface that has put Hadid under a controversial spotlight.

In 2017, the model was faced with heavy criticism after her sister - Bella Hadid - posted a video in which Gigi can be seen imitating a Buddha cookie by squinting her eyes in an attempt to "look Asian."
