According to the UAE-based Security Industry Regulatory Agency, theft is the most common of the top six crimes that are carried out in Dubai.

However, authorities announced that overall, during 2017, the rate of crimes committed in Dubai dropped by 15 percent.

Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for the Criminal Investigation Affairs of Dubai Police, said there was an 8.4 percent increase in drug operations carried out by the Anti-Narcotic Department.

A total of 1,742 cases were recorded in 2017 compared to 1,607 cases in 2016, with 2,553 drug suspects arrested in 2017, an increase from 2,121 in 2016.

In 2017, in the neighboring emirate of Sharjah, police recorded a total of 12,633 crimes compared to 13,638 in 2016. 

Sharjah Police said there was also an improvement in people’s attitudes, with 97 percent of people reporting feeling safe in Sharjah last year, compared to 92 percent in 2016.
