The American University of Beirut will honor Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki with an honorary doctorate in humane letters during its 147th commencement.

One of the most admired Arab filmmakers of her generation, Labaki has long advocated for Arabs and Lebanese youth. Through her work on- and offscreen, Labaki has provided a voice for a generation who have struggled in the face of stereotypes and taboos.

She has not only received multiple international prizes for directing films "Caramel" and "Where Do We Go Now" but has also starred in a number of films throughout her career.

In addition to recognizing Labaki, the university will honor world-renowned risk specialist and best-selling author Nassim Taleb and chemistry legend Samir Zard.

“They have been chosen in recognition of their achievements on the international stage and their determination not to let conventional wisdom stand in the way of their quest for transformative excellence,” AUB President Dr. Fadlo Khuri said in a statement .
