Souad Saleh, professor of comparative jurisprudence in Al Azhar University, said during a controversial television appearance on CBC's Hona Al Assema Show Tuesday that reconstructing a woman's hymen was permissible in Islam.
The professor, perhaps fearing public backlash from the Egyptian society who dictate a woman's life according to a membrane which partially closes the opening of the vagina and is prone to breaking with the slightest move, explained that in previous years, she too thought it was forbidden.
Souad explained that she had believed it was forbidden or "haram" because it was deceitful.
Her views have now changed however and publicly stated that there is no "shame" in reconstructing one's hymen so long as they have asked God for forgiveness for any "prior digressions."
