An undocumented Muslim migrant, who climbed four storeys to save a child from falling down a Paris building, is being hailed as a hero worldwide.
Malian Mamoudou Gassama made international headlines after a video capturing the moment he saved the four-year-old went viral on social media.
The incident took place on Saturday and saw the man scale a building to rescue the toddler, after he spotted him dangling from a balcony.
The migrant who arrived in France last year after a dangerous journey on a boat, has now been granted the French citizenship by President Emmanuel Macron, who also met with Gassama earlier this week.
Gassama will now be offered a job as a fire fighter
During the meeting, which went down at the Élysée Palace, Macron "personally thanked Mr Gassama, gave him a medal for courage and said he would also be offered a role in the fire service," BBC reported.
Before leaving the palace, the brave man shared details of the child's rescue with the president, saying:
"I just didn't have time to think, I ran across the road to go and save him. I just climbed up and thank God, God helped me. The more I climbed the more I had the courage to climb up higher, that's it."
Gassama was also hailed by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. In a tweet she posted online, she referred to the young man as "Spiderman of the 18th" - the district where the incident took place.
French media said the boy's parents were not at home when the incident occurred. His mother was out of Paris and his father will now be questioned for leaving the child unattended.
