'Muslim Drag Queens' stirs controversy on Twitter

The British documentary tackles a very touchy subject in the Middle East, and the twitterverse didn't respond well.

A new British documentary on Muslim drag queens has stirred a backlash in the Middle East.

Directed by Marcus Plowright and narrated by LGBT activist Sir Ian McKellen, "Muslim Drag Queens" follows three performers, Asifa, Ibrahim and Imran, in the United Kingdom.

The show, which aired Monday night on Britain's Channel 4, depicts the men's lives to shed light into an entire community in the U.K. that remains hidden due to the potential backlash.

While many showed their support for the documentary and called for equality, others took to Twitter to publicly bash the community. #MuslimDragQueens quickly hit the trending list on Twitter in Egypt.

Despite the massive number of hateful tweets and bigoted remarks, a few were encouraging people to be themselves and calling on others not to judge.
