Masr Al Arabia, a popular TV channel among Egyptians, decided to conduct a simple experiment on Egyptian youth to find out how much attention they were paying to regional and international affairs.
Armed with a camera and microphone, a news correspondent walked around Egyptian streets and asked a number of youth if they know where Al-Aqsa Mosque is located.
The answers were astonishing as one student thought the third most important site in Islam was located in Heliopolis, a metropolitan area in Cairo, while another said it was in Saudi Arabia. The most alarming answer however, came from a young teenager who believed that Al-Aqsa Mosque was occupied by "Palestinian forces who don't allow people to go in pray."
Al-Aqsa Mosque has been a flashpoint for decades in occupied Jerusalem, as though it is legally controlled by the Jordanian government, Israel controls access to it and regularly bars Palestinian men from praying there.
