If you’ve had a look at the colors that retailers are churning this Autumn, you’ll recognize just a couple standouts – deep maroon and safari green. Let’s focus on the latter. While the hue reminds you of designer safari suits popularized by Saint Laurent and Ted Lapidus in the 70s, in the back of your mind you know you can’t just go out there now and wear the look. The aesthetic, as you’ll find, is in a love-hate relationship with the fashion world and right now, the love just isn’t there.

Additionally, there’s just some people, myself included, who can’t go full-on Safari without looking like someone going as Steve Irwin for Halloween. So should we just skip this color and go for something a little more traditionally Fall? Not if you can make it work.

I recently collaborated with global footwear and accessories brand ALDO (who just opened their largest store in the world at Dubai Festival City) for my outfits for the sixth season of Fashion Forward and specifically chose pieces in this color to include in my look. Instead of going all out, I wanted to achieve that vibe with distinct subtlety, a sartorial quality not many local showgoers seem to be familiar with.

Picking out a military green satchel briefcase and a pair of moss brogues, I decided on these pieces to be the highlights of the attire by making the rest appear muted. The jacket and trousers are done in such earthy tones that leave the floor open for the greens to shine, while the striped white and green shirt offers a nice break in between.
