Amal Clooney turned heads in the courtroom and online yesterday as she poked fun at the boatload of journalists that showed up to her most recent court case in Strasbourg, France.
With more paparazzi than is typical for a courtroom, Clooney hit the European Court of Human Rights, sparking a Twitter debate. She was there with Geoffrey Robertson QC, to challenge the appeal of Doğu Perinçek, a Turkish politician who denied the killing of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915.
A seasoned political journalist, scoffing at the amount of paparazzi, asked Clooney what she was wearing, commenting that he expected Versace. Not missing a beat, the Lebanese beauty (and brain) said, "I'm wearing Ede & Ravenscroft."
Ede & Ravenscroft is a famous English company that has been making legal robes since 1689...a far cry from the high fashion world of the Golden Globes, where Clooney was recently photographed with her more-famous husband, George Clooney.
The reporter's comment was heard around the world, as his scoff was re-interpreted as sexist and silly, which is funny, as that was precisely what the Belgium journalist was trying to point out about the media fuss surrounding Clooney's latest trial.
Other cases that Clooney has led the charge on include representing Greece in a bid to have the Elgin Marbles returned from the British Museum, as well as representing the Al Jazeera journalists imprisoned in Egypt.
