On Sunday, passengers and crew members on board a Jet Airways flight from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, to Kochi, India, were in for quite a surprise. A passenger went into premature labor as the plane was mid-air, Al Arabiya reported.
“The guest delivered a baby boy at 35,000 feet,” Jet Airways said in a statement released the day after. They added that the crew and a passenger, who was a trained nurse, helped with the delivery.
Pilots immediately diverted flight 9W 569 to Mumbai following the baby's birth.
On Monday, an official at Mumbai’s Holy Spirit Hospital told AFP that "both the mother and baby boy were doing well."
The boy is the first to be born on board a flight on the private Indian Airline; to celebrate his birth, they gifted him a free lifetime travel pass.
Jet Airways welcomed the newborn with a cute note shared on Twitter
In a delightful note posted on the newborn's behalf and addressed to his dad, the Airline shared the news of his birth with the world.
"It's amazing how the world is talking about my arrival on board Jet Airways flight," the card reads.
“They say you are lucky when you are born a with a silver spoon. I say, you are lucky when you are born with wings to fly! Love, Baby On Board!"
Certainly not a first this year
This is certainly not the first baby to be born on a flight this year.
On May 12, Emirates flight EK075 was forced to make an emergency landing at Larnaka airport in Cyprus after a baby boy was delivered mid-air.
Also this year, in April, the cabin crew of Turkish Airlines also assisted a passenger, Nafi Diaby, in delivering a baby girl - later on named Kadiju-12,800 meters up in the air.
