Although U.S. president Donald Trump's dual attempt to ban Muslims from the country has failed, it has certainly contributed to a rise in Islamophobia.
Muslims continue to confront the hateful rhetoric, some by telling their stories, others by calling Trump out – and this artist is doing just that.
Saint Hoax, an anonymous Syrian artists, who splits his time between Beirut and New York, recently released a photo series that can fairly be described as a 'mirror to Trump's face'.
By replacing slogans on misogynistic ads from the 1950s with real statements Trump has made about women over the years, Saint Hoax really exposes the regressive, misogynistic, and hateful nature of the words as expressed by the U.S. president.
"Making America Misogynistic Again"
Saint Hoax mainly “creates subversive visuals by mixing politics with popular culture.”
His latest piece uses old American advertisement and pairs them with quotes that have been said by Trump.
In an interview with AJ+, Saint Hoax stated that he came up with his pseudonym because he was “looking for something that contradicts itself."
“A saint is someone who is pure, and a hoax is a deceptive lie”.
Saint Hoax was born and raised in the Middle East, specifically in Syria, and decided to use social media to freely express himself through political satire molded within the lines of art.
The Syrian artist exploits social media to its fullest in order to display his pieces without censorship. This, he says, has been extremely useful for him since he began his online career anonymously and he plans to keep it that way. He has received multiple death threats on the backdrop of other socio-political works he has released. But this has not prevented him from speaking out.
In his interview with AJ+, Saint Hoax was forced to speak from behind a mask in order to preserve his secret identity. What he hopes is that “people would understand from this campaign is that words matter," especially if they're coming from the president of one of the most powerful nations on Earth.
Saint Hoax traveled to a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon's Akkar last month to throw a Disney costume party for the young girls there, Buzzfeed reported.
“Due to war and displacement, the education of most refugee girls is disrupted. This often leads to sexual and gender-based violence, increased risks of exploitation ... It’s highly important to educate and empower girls in refugee camps,“ he said during his visit.
