The Dubai Police Department made quite a few headlines in April 2013 when they unveiled that the new cars on their enhanced crime-fighting fleet are Ferraris and Lamborghinis. This year, Dubai’s Police Department makes the news again with their announcement about incorporating Google Glass into their daily endeavors to maintain a safe and orderly city.

The computerized hands-free glasses are expected to undergo two phases of experiments, the first of which being on a traffic scale. Colonel Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi, General Director of Smart Services at Dubai Police, told Gulf News that there are two applications linked to the Glass. The first one allows officers to take pictures of traffic violations, automatically reading the license plates and directly sending the information to the police station database. The other application assists the officers in keeping an eye out for wanted cars. Once Google Glass reads a license plate saved on the database that as reported stolen or wanted, it alerts the officer.

Should the new gadget pass this experimental phase successfully, the police force is planning to take Google Glass to the next level by chasing after the bad guys using facial recognition, Reuters reports .

Not only does the new technology enhance officers’ performance, but it also invites citizens who own Google Glass to take part in reporting traffic violations.

Google Glass is expected to be available in the United States for $1,500. This figure may seem really expensive if they meet the plan to provide every officer with Google Glass, until we recall the Ferraris and Lamborghinis!
