A couple in the south of France was referred to public prosecution after naming their son 'Jihad', The Local France reported

"The couple, who come from the Toulouse suburb of Léguevin, tried to name their son 'Jihad' when he was born in August but the local town hall immediately alerted the public prosecutor of their controversial choice of name," the publication wrote.

According to The Local France, if the prosecutor refers the family to court, a judge might have to decide if they can keep the child's name.

After "a series of terror attacks by homegrown jihadists" hit France in recent months, many have come to falsely associate the word 'jihad' with terrorism, even though it has literally nothing to do with it...

So what does 'Jihad' really mean?

This isn't the first time the word or name 'jihad' confuses people in the west.

The use of it in an activist's speech and even in a tweet previously led to social media meltdowns of the sorts.

This is because the word is falsely linked with extremism, terrorism, and violence.

But as the Muslim scholar and Twitter commentator, Qasim Rashid, perfectly puts it, "'Jihad' means 'to struggle.' It does NOT IN ANY WAY mean to 'wage holy war,' or 'kill the infidel,' or 'commit terrorism.'"

In fact, its true meaning manifests in people's daily struggles, in their peaceful stand against oppression, and in their attempts to become better human beings.
