Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has simplified its baggage allowances, in a move to align them with its international partner network.

"In line with industry best practice, we are moving to a fair and transparent baggage concept,” Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ chief commercial officer, told The National . “Our new fare choices are an easier way for guests to understand what they are paying for, offering clearer pricing, and the flexibility which best suits their travel plans."

While allowances for some of its cheapest tickets will be reduced – with economy breaking deals and saver tickets allowances on some routes being lowered to 23 kg from 30 kg – many passengers will see an increase in what they can check.

Economy class passengers on most routes will now be allowed two peices at 23 kg each, instead of the previous single 30 kg checked bag. The 30 kg allowance will still apply to flights to/from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Passengers who go over weight will also see huge reductions in the cost - with over charges cut by up to 90 percent on some routes.

The new rules go into effect for booking made after Sept. 14.

Etihad, along with the Gulf's Emirates and Qatar Airways, have made huge inroads into the international markets, stealing market share from European and American competitors. Etihad's move to lower checked bag costs is in marked contrast to the trend among American carriers to increase fees and reduce or remove the free allowance.
