Famed Egyptian actor Omar Sharif died Friday afternoon in a Cairo hospital. His agent, Steve Kenis, announced his death, saying "he suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo."

Best known for his roles in "Lawrence of Arabia," a role which earned him an Oscar nomination, and "Doctor Zhivago," the role that earned him to win a Golden Globe, Sharif became a Hollywood star and worked on multiple well known films such as Behold A Pale Horse and Gengis Khan.

Sharif, born Michel Demitri Chalhoub, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease last May.

Born in Egypt, the star spent most of his life in Europe after clashing with the government of Gamal Abdul-Nasser over travel restrictions. He was in more than 90 films over the course of his nearly 60-year career. His last role was in "Rock the Casbah," a French-Moroccan production released in 2013.
