" Imagine if girls were to join the army " is trending on Twitter in Egypt.
While some people were taking the subject lightheartedly by cracking jokes about how women would be "too busy looking for their make up," a few feisty women took the chance to fight back.
And it was awesome.
"Maybe then men in Egypt would join the army without running away from their post or duty to protect the country."
"Why bother imagining? I'm a woman living in Egypt and that's a worst punishment than joining the army."
"Why not? In serious situations, women proved that we're as courageous as men. We're not any less than you are."
"It's my lifelong dream!"
"They'll most probably do better than men because women have powerful minds."
Yet, Egyptian men continued to poke fun at the idea of female soldiers. Comments such as "I need my makeup" or "I won't shoot a terrorist because he's cute" were made. "I'm sorry but I'm feeding my baby" and "the tank is not pink and therefore, I will not fight" also appeared.
"They would use hand grenades for birthday parties."
"I can't train this week because I am on my period."
"And I'll be the leader of hotties."
Nevertheless, it was other female responses that are perhaps, more alarming. "We'll fight over the mirrors" and "We'll spend an hour wrapping our headscarves" were common thoughts shared by women. "I would be too disgusted to kill a mosquito" and "we'll be too busy taking selfies with tanks and military planes" were shared.
"She probably won't go to war because she broke a nail."
"Why aren't you on duty? 'Because I am waiting for my nails to dry.'"
"They'll want a Barbie sticker on RBJs."
The results shed light onto how women are perceived by the Egyptian society.
