A 19-year-old Egyptian bride-to-be committed suicide after she was physically abused by family members for dancing at her engagement party.
The college student reportedly hung herself in a locked room using a blanket after a heated dispute with her family. The argument ensued after the victim's engagement party. During the celebrations, the 19-year-old woman took off her hijab and face veil (niqab) and danced with friends.
Angered by her actions, her family violently scolded her.
The woman then locked herself in a room and threatened to kill herself. Her family attempted to break in to save her.
Her father eventually got inside through the balcony but it was too late. The young woman's body was transferred to a private hospital in the city of Al Zagazig, located in lower Egypt. Medics immediately pronounced her dead.
The incident was reported to local police who launched an investigation into the matter. Based on their findings, the country's public prosecution ordered an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
