Egyptian 'Spend the day in Khalifa' project hits crowdfunding goal

Athar Lina believes that making monuments beneficial to the community is the best way to get citizens to engage in the preservation process.

The awareness project "Spend the day in Khalifa 3," organized by Egyptian heritage conservation initiative Athar Lina  has successfully met and surpassed its fundraising goal on the popular Middle East crowdfunding site Zoomaal .

The project's crowdfunding campaign has collected $6,412, exceeding its goal of $6,000. Now "Athar Lina" can successfully carry out its third annual "Spend the day in Khalifa" event.

The event is just one of many of the initiative's efforts, as it has been working for three years to conserve Cairo's monuments, in cooperation with the Antiquities Ministry, through establishing citizen participation.

Athar Lina believes that making monuments beneficial to the community is the best way to get citizens to engage in the preservation process. It prioritizes raising awareness and getting the public involved as its main goals.

It has successfully conserved a cluster of heritage sites including four medieval domes and an early 20th century building in Al-Khalifa, the area it hopes to promote through "Spend the day in Khalifa."

The project this year is working toward four main goals: To raise awareness about the historic area, to foster a sense of attachment to the buildings, to target a wider range of interests for its audience and finally to establish the place as a tourist destination.

However, it is not only the historic buildings in Al-Khalifa that the initiative is interested in preserving through this and other projects, but also the rich culture, the local people and the many stories that co-exist in its streets.

To achieve that, the event plans to incorporate a variety of interactive activities to get the participants to feel truly invested in the cause, such as treasure hunts, storytelling walks, musical performances and signage workshops.
