The United Arab Emirates is all abuzz about happiness – and even the state-owned taxi company is jumping on the bandwagon by launching a happiness indicator to measure and track how content its more than 11,000 employees are.

"The introduction of the Happiness Indicator stems from the deep conviction of the DTC that the happiness of employees and drivers reflects positively on the overall job performance and operational efficiency," Dubai Taxi Corporation CEO Yousef Al Ali said.

DTC, which is a unit of Dubai's Road & Transport Authority, will survey employees, asking them to rate their level of contentment as happy, neutral or unhappy, using the results to drive initiatives to improve driver satisfaction.

The initiative is based on the principle that happy employees are more productive, and falls in line with the UAE's push to focus on national happiness, a keystone of which was the appointment of a minister of happiness earlier this year.
