In the Arab world, traditions and customs have taught us that young people have a responsibility to get married as soon as possible in order to fulfil their responsibility in contributing to society through childbirth and rearing. This prospect for many millennials has become daunting, especially due to economic hardship.

Studies in the US have shown that millennials would rather get married later, and it seems like young Lebanese feel the same way, especially with a mounting trash crisis, chronic electricity and water shortages, and stagnant political deadlock . Using the hashtag #WeDontWantMarriageBecause, Lebanese Twitter users gave several reasons as to why marriage was not an option for them now:

"It's still early"

"A house costs the salaries of 10 people over 100 years"

"Because it's a huge responsibility and a burden"

"There's no money, no jobs, no water, no electricity"

"The [financial] situation is bad, Leila"

"The situation is garbage"

"Marriage kills love"

"All the beautiful ladies are already married."
