Camels will soon be able to breathe a bit easier in Ras Al Khaimah.
Every day, camels use to question, "Will this be the day I don't make it across the highway?"
Accidents between camels and motorists have become a problem so Ras Al Khaimah decided to build an underpass for its four-legged residents.
The underpass will be located Al Shuhada road, connecting the emirate with Fujairah.
Across the emirate, camels are certainly applauding the decision.
"I cross Al Shuhada road almost daily with my son to get water. I used to close my eyes and pray every time we stepped out onto that highway. We've all heard the stories about fellow camels who didn't make it." one local camel told StepFeed. "I'm so grateful that we will have a more secure crossing soon!"
However, the 37-meter-long underpass will also save human lives. Running into a large animal like a camel at high speeds can do a lot of damage to vehicles and the passengers inside.
"It can save the lives of motorists who surely drive fast on highways and save the possessions of owners, who pay a lot of money to own these camels," one local resident told The National .
Underpasses for animals to safely cross are not exactly a new idea however.
They have been used in the United States, especially in wooded areas where animals and motorists may frequently collide.
We're just glad that Ras Al Khaimah's camels will now have a safer way to cross to the other side.
(Eds. Note: For the confused, StepFeed didn't actually speak with a local camel, because none were willing to be quoted … However, the rest of the article is factual.)
