After the United Kingdom imposed a ban on all flights to Sharm El Sheikh last year, British Airways has announced it will abandon all flights to the Egyptian hot spot "indefinitely," according to The Independent .

The announcement comes a day after reports surfaced that most other UK airlines may resume flights to the resort later this year.

Despite a statement by Daily News Egypt on June 15, quoting the regional British Airways manager who had confirmed the airline would resume the route, British Airways has confirmed that it is not willing to do so anytime soon.

“The safety and security of our customers will always be our top priorities and we have suspended our flights from Gatwick to Sharm el Sheikh indefinitely," the airline said in a statement, according to The Independent .

The airline ensured customers who hold bookings on any cancelled flights can claim a full refund or use the money for a new booking to an alternate destination.

The ban was initially imposed following the crash of a Metrojet Airbus A320 in the Sinai desert in 2015, which left 224 passengers and the entire cabin crew dead.

The UK ban has taken a toll on Egypt's tourism with an estimated loss of 120 million British pounds ($176 million) a month since the ban was imposed.
