Before the Friday brunches, the day-long trips to Dubai Mall and the rides in Ferrari world, there were the open beaches, the golden desert and the other wonders of Mother Nature in the UAE. These were – once upon a time – the first and obvious choice for a day out or a weekend.
So, why not go back to basics and rediscover these exciting outdoor spots? They provide an alternative getaway for a fun and affordable weekend, especially in the cooler months of the year.
Here are 5 alternative ways to spend the weekend in the UAE:
1. Kayaking in the mangroves
You don’t need to travel abroad to do kayaking and enjoy an active day under the sun. You can do that in Abu Dhabi’s natural mangrove reserve.
We recommend you start in the early morning or around sunset to enjoy the beautiful scenery and quiet surroundings. For as little as 150 dirhams ($40), you can set out on a kayak alone or with friends and explore the marine life of the mangroves. This includes fish, turtles, sea snakes and rare birds.
After that, you can relax in one of the many restaurants located near the reserve.
2. Hiking on Wadi Shawka
Ras Al Khaimah might be small on size but it is huge on adventure. It hosts many hiking trails and camping spots between its wadis and mountains.
One of the most popular hiking trails in the emirate is Wadi Shawka, which stretches for 10 km and forms a loop around a beautiful natural pool. Instead of doing mall patrols on a weekend why not head to Ras Al Khaimah where you can enjoy the expansive views, the dramatic hills and the complete silence?
Enjoy all this while hiking and doing your body a massive favor! If hiking is not your thing, you can opt for cycling, camping or off-roading.
3. A unique experience in Liwa desert
When was the last time you clearly saw the stars in Dubai or Abu Dhabi? Or enjoyed uninterrupted and much needed silence?
You can do all that and immerse yourself in a wonderful natural experience at the Liwa desert, part of the great Empty Quarter desert (Rub Al Khali).
This spot, south west of Abu Dhabi, is ideal for a desert safari, camping under the stars and dune surfing. It also has some of the tallest sand dunes in the world!
There are no shops or restaurants in sight, so you will have to bring everything you need with you.
4. Camping in Hatta
Yes, sitting on Kite beach or sipping cocktails in Saadiyat island is fun, but how about some adventure for a change?
Pack your camping gear, hop in your 4x4 and head out to Hatta (100 km from Dubai). Once there, you can choose to campsite near the Big Red, which is a big red dune on the Hatta-Dubai road, or drive further down to enjoy amazing views of dramatic hills and blue skies.
Other activities you can do in Hatta include kayaking, hiking and mountain biking. And don't forget photography!
5. Outdoors fun in Ras Al Khor
If food, fun, fresh air and stunning views are what you’re after, then the perfect place for you on weekends is Ras Al Khor in Dubai.
Until the end of April, the Dubai Creek Harbor Promenade will be hosting a Rise event every weekend, which features live performances, kids activities, food trucks and outdoor cinema.
