Late on Tuesday, legendary Egyptian actress Shadia passed away at the age of 86 after a long battle with an illness, The Daily Star reported.
Often dubbed "the idol of the masses", the star was one of the most iconic figures of the Egyptian cinema's golden era.
Born in 1931 as Fatma Shaker, Shadia started acting at the age of 16, and "appeared in more than 100 films during her 40-year career".
She retired in 1986, making very few and rare public appearances thereafter. In recent weeks, several news reports stated that her health had deteriorated after she suffered a stroke.
Soon after news of the icon's death started making the rounds online, tributes poured in from across the Arab world.
